End-to-end (E2E) encryption for meetings

Summary

This guide explains Zoom's optional End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) feature. It outlines the significant limitations of using E2EE and provides the official FAU recommendation so you can make an informed decision about your meeting's security settings.

Body

What is End-to-End Encryption?

End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) is an optional security setting that offers the highest level of privacy for a meeting. However, this increased security comes at a cost: enabling E2EE requires disabling many of Zoom's most common and useful features.

Zoom's standard setting, Enhanced Encryption, is highly secure and is the default for all meetings at FAU.

The Official FAU Recommendation

For the vast majority of academic and administrative meetings, you should NOT use End-to-End Encryption.

It is advised that FAU users forgo using E2EE and continue using Zoom's standard Enhanced Encryption. The standard encryption is very secure and allows you to use all Zoom features. E2EE should only be enabled in rare circumstances where the meeting's topic is of an exceptionally sensitive nature.

Disabled Features with E2EE

If you choose to enable End-to-End Encryption, please be aware that you will lose access to the following critical features:

  • Join before host
  • Cloud recording
  • Streaming to services like YouTube or Facebook
  • Live transcription
  • Breakout Rooms
  • Polling
  • 1:1 private chat
  • Meeting reactions (emojis, raise hand, etc.)

Because features like cloud recording and Breakout Rooms are essential for many classes, E2EE is not suitable for most instructional purposes.

How to Enable E2EE (If Absolutely Necessary)

If, after considering the limitations, you determine that your meeting requires this level of security, you can enable it when scheduling your meeting on the FAU Zoom Web Portal.

  1. Go to the FAU Zoom Web Portal: https://fau-edu.zoom.us and sign in.
  2. Click Schedule a Meeting.
  3. In the Security section, you will see an Encryption option.
  4. By default, Enhanced Encryption is selected. To enable E2EE, select the End-to-end encryption option. You will see a warning message listing the features that will be disabled.
  5. Click Save.
