Summary
This guide explains how to use the My Mediasite Web Editor to make basic edits to your videos. You will learn how to remove unwanted parts from the beginning, end, or middle of a recording.
Body
1. Launching the Web Editor
- Log in to your My Mediasite portal.
- Find the video you wish to edit and click on its title to open the presentation summary page.
- Below the video preview window, click the Edit Video button.
- The Mediasite Web Editor will open in a new browser tab. You will see a video preview on top and a visual timeline of your video at the bottom. All editing is done on this timeline.
2. How to Trim the Beginning or End of a Video
"Trimming" is the process of cutting off unwanted footage from the start or end of your recording.
To Trim the Beginning:
- On the timeline, click and drag the playhead (the vertical line with a triangle on top) to the exact moment you want your video to start.
- With the playhead in position, make a cut by pressing the 'S' key on your keyboard or by clicking the Split button in the timeline toolbar. This will split the video into two segments.
- Click on the first segment at the very beginning of the timeline to select it. It will be highlighted.
- Press the Delete key on your keyboard. The beginning section is now removed.
To Trim the End:
- Drag the playhead to the exact moment you want your video to end.
- Make a cut by pressing the 'S' key or clicking the Split button.
- Click on the last segment at the very end of the timeline to select it.
- Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
3. How to Cut a Section from the Middle
To remove a mistake or unwanted content from the middle of your video, you need to make two cuts.
- Drag the playhead to the beginning of the section you want to remove and make a cut (press 'S' or click Split).
- Next, drag the playhead to the end of the section you want to remove and make another cut.
- You have now created an isolated segment in the middle of your timeline. Click this middle segment to select it.
- Press the Delete key. The unwanted section will be removed, and Mediasite will automatically "stitch" the remaining parts together.
4. Saving Your Edits: 'Save Existing' vs. 'Save as New'
When you are satisfied with your edits, click the Save button in the top-right corner of the editor. A pop-up window will appear, asking you how you want to save your work. You have two choices.
Option A: Save to existing presentation (Recommended)
- What it does: This option overwrites the current video with your edited version.
- Why we recommend it: The primary advantage of this method is that it does not change the original share link. If you have already embedded this video in Canvas or shared the link with someone, you do not need to update it. The existing link will automatically point to the new, edited version after it finishes processing.
- Best for: Correcting a mistake, trimming silence, or otherwise improving a video that is already in use.
Option B: Save as a new presentation
- What it does: This option creates a brand new, separate video in your My Mediasite library and leaves the original, unedited video completely untouched.
- Key takeaway: This will generate a brand new and different share link. If you want to use this edited version in Canvas, you will need to re-embed it.
- Best for: Creating a shorter version of a longer lecture for a different purpose, while still needing to keep the full-length original.
After choosing your save method and giving the presentation a name (if prompted), Mediasite will begin to re-process the video. This can take some time. The video will be updated (or appear as a new item) in your My Mediasite library once processing is complete.
