I Can’t See My Courses in Canvas (General Reasons & Troubleshooting)

Body

Overview

If you cannot see one or more of your courses in Canvas, it is usually due to publishing settings, start dates, enrollment sync delays, or account balance issues that require action in MYFAU. This article covers the most common reasons why a course may be missing, including unpublished courses, courses that have not started yet, Dashboard filtering, add/drop enrollment delays, and cross‑listed courses. It also explains situations where Canvas may direct you to FAU administrators, such as registration cancellation for non‑payment or requirements related to the Mandatory Course Entry Quiz.

Quick Checks in Canvas

  1. Verify that you are logging in at the correct website canvas.fau.edu
  2. Check “All Courses” (not just your Dashboard)
    • Go to Courses > All Courses.
    • If the course is listed but not clickable, it is not published yet.
    • If the course is listed but not on your Dashboard, favorite/star it to show it on the Dashboard.
  3. Course Not Started Yet
    • You cannot access a course until:
      • The term start date has begun, and
      • The instructor has published the course.
  4. Enrollment Sync Delay (Add/Drop)
    • If you just added or dropped a course, it may take time for Canvas to update. This can take a few hours or update overnight depending on timing.
  5. Canvas Mobile App Note
    • The Canvas Student app only shows active and published courses. If nothing appears, check in a browser and favorite the course.

General Reasons You Might Not See a Course

  • The instructor has not published the course yet.
  • The course starts later and will only open once the date arrives.
  • Your Canvas Dashboard favorites are hiding the course.
  • Your enrollment has not synced yet after adding/dropping the course.
  • The course is cross‑listed (merged) with another section, so you will see the combined course instead.

When Canvas Support Directs You to FAU (General FAU‑Specific Issues)

  1. Registration Canceled for Non‑Payment

    • If tuition was not paid by the deadline, your course registration may have been canceled. If your registration was canceled, your Canvas courses will not appear until you are reinstated. Check your MyFAU account and contact the appropriate office if needed.

  2. Mandatory Course Entry Quiz (MCEQ)

    • The Mandatory Course Entry Quiz must be completed for each course every semester.

    • If you cannot see your quiz in Canvas, you can use the direct link and find more information provided by Financial Aid here

    • Failure to complete the quiz can delay financial aid and may prevent course access.

What To Do Next (Quick Decision Guide)

  • I just added the course → Wait for the enrollment sync to run (can take a few hours).

  • I see the course under All Courses, but it’s grayed out → The course is not published yet; wait for the instructor to open it.

  • Other students see the course but I don’t → Check registration status, holds, or non‑payment cancellations.

  • Canvas told me to contact FAU about the Course Entry Survey → Complete the Mandatory Course Entry Quiz using Financial Aid's instructions.

  • I think the course is merged or cross‑listed → Look for a similarly named combined course or ask your instructor.

Still Can’t Find Your Course?
