This article explains how current FAU students and employees can install Microsoft 365 apps, use Microsoft 365 online, request and install Visio, and troubleshoot common Microsoft 365 activation issues.
 
Before you begin: Microsoft 365 access is only available while you maintain an active FAU student or employee status. Alumni and individuals who are no longer current FAU students or employees do not have access to install or activate Microsoft 365 through FAU. Microsoft 365 apps and OneDrive access will be deactivated after you leave FAU.

Install on a Personal Computer

Use these steps to install Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, on a personal computer.

  1. Remove any older versions of Microsoft Office from your computer, if needed.
  2. Go to the Microsoft Apps & Devices page: https://portal.office.com/account?ServiceID=LanguageItem .
  3. Sign in using your FAU email address, such as FAUNetID@fau.edu.
  4. If prompted, select Work or school account.
  5. Complete the FAU single sign-on process.
  6. Select Install Office or Install.
  7. Once the installation file downloads, open the file and follow the on-screen prompts.
  8. After installation, open a Microsoft 365 app, such as Word or Excel.
  9. Sign in using your FAU email address and password to activate Microsoft 365.

Install on a Mobile Device

Microsoft 365 apps can also be installed on mobile devices, including iPhones, iPads, Android phones, and Android tablets.

  1. Open the App Store on an iPhone or iPad, or open the Google Play Store on an Android device.
  2. Search for the Microsoft app you want to install, such as Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneDrive.
  3. Download and install the app.
  4. Open the app after installation.
  5. Sign in using your FAU email address and password.
  6. If prompted, select Work or school account.
  7. Complete the FAU single sign-on process.

Use Microsoft 365 Apps Online

You can use Microsoft 365 apps online through a web browser. The web versions include apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, but some features may only be available in the desktop apps.

  1. Go to the Microsoft 365 portal: https://portal.office.com .
  2. Sign in using your FAU email address and password.
  3. Select the app you want to use from the Microsoft 365 home page or app launcher.

Request and Install Microsoft Visio & Project Pro

Microsoft Visio and Project Pro require a separate license before it can be installed or used. If you need access to Visio or Project Pro, submit a software request first.  Some Copilot features require a paid license.  If you need access to these features, submit a software request first.

Request a Visio, Project Pro, or Copilot License

  1. Submit a software request using the Software Request Form .
  2. Wait for the request to be reviewed and processed.
  3. After your license has been assigned, follow the installation steps below.

Install Visio and Project Pro

  1. Go to the Microsoft Apps & Devices page: https://portal.office.com/account?ServiceID=LanguageItem .
  2. Sign in using your FAU account.
  3. Select Apps & devices, if it is not already selected.
  4. Look for Visio or Project Pro in the list of available apps.
  5. Click Install Visio or Project Pro and follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: If Visio or Project Pro does not appear, your license may not have been assigned yet. Confirm that your software request has been processed.

Use Visio and Project Pro on the Web

You may also be able to use the web version of Visio from the Microsoft 365 portal after your license has been assigned.

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com .
  2. Sign in using your FAU account.
  3. Select the Visio or Project Pro app from the Microsoft 365 home page or app launcher.

Troubleshooting

Use this section if Microsoft 365 shows a subscription expired message, asks you to activate Office, or has trouble signing in with your FAU account.


Check the Account Section in Office

Before trying the steps below, check the Account section in a Microsoft 365 desktop app. This area may display the current sign-in status, an account-related error, or a Fix me option.

  1. Open a Microsoft 365 desktop app, such as Word, Excel, or Outlook.
  2. Select File.
  3. Select Office Account or Account.
  4. Review the page for any sign-in or activation messages.
  5. If a Fix me button appears, select it and follow the prompts.
  6. If you see that you are signed out, sign in again using your FAU account.
  7. If the issue continues, follow the Windows or Mac troubleshooting steps below.

Windows Repair

  1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.
  2. Right-click the Start button.
  3. Select Installed apps or Apps and Features.
  4. Locate Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the app list.
  5. Select the More options button or select the application, then choose Modify.
  6. If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.
  7. Select Quick Repair, then select Repair.
  8. If Quick Repair does not resolve the issue, repeat the steps and select Online Repair.
  9. After the repair completes, restart your device.
  10. Open any Microsoft Office application, such as Word or Excel.
  11. Sign in using your FAU account.
Note: Online Repair may take longer and requires an internet connection.

Mac License Removal Tool

If Microsoft 365 apps on a Mac continue to show activation or sign-in issues, use the Microsoft Office License Removal Tool.

Important: The Microsoft Office License Removal Tool removes all Microsoft 365 for Mac licenses from the computer. After running the tool, you will need to sign in again with the account associated with your Microsoft 365 license.
  1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.
  2. Select the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Open System Settings.
  4. Select General, then select Sharing.
  5. Confirm that the computer name does not include invalid characters, such as an apostrophe.
  6. Download the Microsoft Office License Removal Tool .
  7. Open the .pkg file from your Mac's Downloads folder.
  8. Select Continue and follow the prompts in the setup wizard.

  1. When you are ready to complete the license removal, select Install.
  2. If prompted, enter your Mac's local administrator password.

  1. After the tool successfully removes the license files, select Close.
  2. Open any Microsoft 365 app, such as Word or Excel.
  3. Sign in using your FAU account.
  4. If the issue continues, you may need to reinstall Microsoft 365 apps before signing in again.
  5. After Microsoft 365 activates successfully, restart your computer.
  6. To remove the license removal tool installer, drag the Microsoft_Office_License_Removal file from Finder > Downloads to Trash.
