Use this section if Microsoft 365 shows a subscription expired message, asks you to activate Office, or has trouble signing in with your FAU account.
Check the Account Section in Office
Before trying the steps below, check the Account section in a Microsoft 365 desktop app. This area may display the current sign-in status, an account-related error, or a Fix me option.
- Open a Microsoft 365 desktop app, such as Word, Excel, or Outlook.
- Select File.
- Select Office Account or Account.
- Review the page for any sign-in or activation messages.
- If a Fix me button appears, select it and follow the prompts.
- If you see that you are signed out, sign in again using your FAU account.
- If the issue continues, follow the Windows or Mac troubleshooting steps below.
Windows Repair
- Close all Microsoft Office applications.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Installed apps or Apps and Features.
- Locate Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the app list.
- Select the More options button or select the application, then choose Modify.
- If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.
- Select Quick Repair, then select Repair.
- If Quick Repair does not resolve the issue, repeat the steps and select Online Repair.
- After the repair completes, restart your device.
- Open any Microsoft Office application, such as Word or Excel.
- Sign in using your FAU account.
Note: Online Repair may take longer and requires an internet connection.
Mac License Removal Tool
If Microsoft 365 apps on a Mac continue to show activation or sign-in issues, use the Microsoft Office License Removal Tool.
Important: The Microsoft Office License Removal Tool removes all Microsoft 365 for Mac licenses from the computer. After running the tool, you will need to sign in again with the account associated with your Microsoft 365 license.
- Close all Microsoft Office applications.
- Select the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
- Open System Settings.
- Select General, then select Sharing.
- Confirm that the computer name does not include invalid characters, such as an apostrophe.
- Download the Microsoft Office License Removal Tool .
- Open the .pkg file from your Mac's Downloads folder.
- Select Continue and follow the prompts in the setup wizard.

- When you are ready to complete the license removal, select Install.
- If prompted, enter your Mac's local administrator password.

- After the tool successfully removes the license files, select Close.
- Open any Microsoft 365 app, such as Word or Excel.
- Sign in using your FAU account.
- If the issue continues, you may need to reinstall Microsoft 365 apps before signing in again.
- After Microsoft 365 activates successfully, restart your computer.
- To remove the license removal tool installer, drag the Microsoft_Office_License_Removal file from Finder > Downloads to Trash.
