Before You Begin
For the best experience, you should have the Zoom Desktop App installed and be signed in with your FAU account. If you have not done this, please see our guide: How to Install the Zoom Desktop App and Sign In (FAU).
There are two common ways to join a meeting: using a direct link or by entering a Meeting ID.
Method A: From Inside Your Canvas Course
This is the most direct and recommended way to join meetings for your classes.
- Log into Canvas and navigate to your course.
- In the course navigation menu on the left, click on the Zoom link. (Image: Screenshot of a Canvas course menu with an arrow pointing to the "Zoom" link.)
- The Zoom page will load. Find the correct class session in the Upcoming Meetings list.
- Click the blue Join button next to the meeting name. (Image: Screenshot of the Zoom LTI page in Canvas, showing the list of upcoming meetings with the "Join" button highlighted for a student.)
- The Zoom app will launch, and you will be placed in the meeting or in a waiting room until the instructor starts the session.
Method B: Using a Link
Most of the time, you will receive an invitation via email or find a link on a Canvas page.
-
Simply click the meeting link. It will look something like this: https://fau-edu.zoom.us/j/1234567890
- Your web browser will open and prompt you for permission to open the Zoom application. Click Allow or Open Zoom Meetings.
- The Zoom app will launch, and you will be placed in the meeting or in a waiting room until the host lets you in.
Method C: Using a Meeting ID
If you are given a Meeting ID and Passcode instead of a link, follow these steps:
-
Open the Zoom Desktop App.
- On the home screen, click the blue Join button.

- In the window that appears, enter the Meeting ID you were given.
- Click Join. You may then be asked to enter a Passcode to continue.
