Troubleshoot Sympa Login and Access Issues

This article provides troubleshooting steps for issues signing in to the Sympa web interface or accessing Sympa mailing list functions.
Sympa website: The FAU Sympa web interface is available at https://lists.fau.edu.
Before submitting a ticket: Confirm that your FAU username and password work successfully for other FAU services.

Log In to Sympa

  1. Go to https://lists.fau.edu.
  2. Select Login in the upper-right corner of the page.
  3. Log in with your FAU account.
  4. If prompted, select Log in locally.
  5. If prompted for an email address, enter your FAU email address.
  6. After logging in, your email address should display in the upper-left corner of the page.

If Your Username and Password Do Not Work

If your FAU username and password do not allow you into the Sympa web interface, first confirm that your credentials work elsewhere.

  1. Try signing in to another FAU service using the same FAU username and password.
  2. If your FAU username and password do not work for other FAU services, resolve the account or password issue first.
  3. If your FAU username and password work for other FAU services but not Sympa, submit a Help Desk ticket for assistance.
Tip: Include the email address you used to sign in and describe what happens when you try to log in.

If You Cannot Find or Access a List

  • Confirm that you are logged in with the correct FAU account.
  • Search for the list from the Sympa web interface.
  • Check the list category that matches the list you are trying to access.
  • If someone sent you the list address, confirm that the list name is spelled correctly.
  • If the list is not visible, it may be private, restricted, or not available to your account.
  • If you need access to a specific list, contact the list owner when possible.

Use Email Commands as an Alternative

Some Sympa functions can be completed by sending commands from your FAU email address to sympa@lists.fau.edu.

Get a list of available commands

  1. Open your FAU email account.
  2. Create a new email message addressed to sympa@lists.fau.edu.
  3. Enter HELP in either the subject line or body of the message.
  4. Send the message.

Sympa will email you a message describing the available commands.

Note: Email commands must be sent from the email address you want Sympa to use for the command.

What to Include in a Help Desk Ticket

If you need to submit a ticket, include as much detail as possible.

  • The Sympa page you are trying to access.
  • The list name or list address, if applicable.
  • The FAU email address you used to sign in.
  • Whether your FAU username and password work for other FAU services.
  • The exact error message or behavior you see.
  • Whether the issue happens in more than one browser.
  • Whether you are trying to subscribe, unsubscribe, create a list, manage a list, or post to a list.

Troubleshooting

  • If Sympa does not load, confirm that you are going to https://lists.fau.edu.
  • If you cannot sign in, confirm that your FAU credentials work for other FAU services.
  • If your FAU credentials work elsewhere but not in Sympa, submit a Help Desk ticket.
  • If you do not see a list, the list may be private, restricted, or unavailable to your account.
  • If you cannot create a list, confirm that you are eligible to create lists.
  • If you cannot manage a list, confirm that you are logged in with the list owner account.
  • If you cannot post to a list, the list may be moderated or restricted to specific senders.
