Google Chat, Contacts, and Brand Accounts in Owl Apps

This article provides legacy Owl Apps guidance for Google Chat, Google Contacts, and Google Brand Accounts.
Note: Availability of Google services may depend on your FAU role, account status, and Google Workspace eligibility.

Google Chat and Contacts

Google Chat and Hangouts may be available for students, faculty, and staff.

FERPA note: There is no global address book or contacts search due to FERPA protections for student information.

To chat with someone, you may need to have communicated with them previously through Owl Mail or add them as a contact in Google.

Add a contact in Google

  1. Log in to your Google account.
  2. Select the Google apps tile.
  3. Open the Contacts app.
  4. Enter the person’s name and email address.
  5. Save the contact.

After the contact is added, the person should be available to search in Google Chat or Hangouts.

Google Brand Accounts

A Brand Account can be useful for creating a Google or YouTube presence for a brand, department, service, or shared purpose. A Brand Account is created by a single user, but multiple owners or editors can be added.

Brand Accounts can help avoid tying a shared Google or YouTube presence to only one individual user.

Important: Review ownership and access carefully. Shared or departmental content should not rely on one individual account when long-term access is needed.

Troubleshooting

  • If you cannot find someone in Google Chat, add them as a Google contact first.
  • If a contact still does not appear, confirm that the email address was entered correctly.
  • If Google Chat or Hangouts is not available, the service may not be enabled for your account.
  • If you need shared ownership for Google or YouTube content, review whether a Brand Account is appropriate.
  • If you are unsure whether to use a Brand Account, contact the Help Desk for guidance.
