Troubleshoot: Gaming & NAT Type

Enhanced Gaming Service

The enhanced gaming service is intended for gaming consoles and similar entertainment devices that require a wired Ethernet connection in FAU residence halls.

Important: This service cannot be provided over wireless. The device must be connected to the wall jack using a wired Ethernet connection.

Important Notes

  • The device must be connected to the wall jack using an Ethernet cable.
  • Students should register the wired/Ethernet MAC address of the device, not the wireless MAC address.
  • Strict NAT is mainly an issue for online multiplayer gaming, party chat, voice chat, or online matchmaking.
  • Strict NAT does not affect single-player offline games.
  • If a device does not have a built-in Ethernet port, a compatible Ethernet adapter, dock, or hub may be required.
  • Wireless-only devices that cannot connect through Ethernet cannot use the enhanced gaming service.

Common Device Types

  • PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4: These systems support a wired LAN connection and should be connected directly to the wall jack using an Ethernet cable.
  • Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One: These systems support a wired Ethernet connection and should be connected directly to the wall jack using an Ethernet cable.
  • Nintendo Switch 2: The Nintendo Switch 2 dock includes a wired LAN port. The console must be placed in the dock and connected to the wall jack using an Ethernet cable.
  • Nintendo Switch OLED Model: The OLED dock includes a built-in wired LAN port and should be connected to the wall jack using an Ethernet cable.
  • Nintendo Switch, original model: The original Nintendo Switch requires a compatible USB Ethernet adapter connected through the dock.
  • Steam Deck and other handheld gaming PCs: These devices may require a compatible USB-C dock, hub, or Ethernet adapter. The device must be connected through Ethernet to use the enhanced gaming service.
  • Gaming PCs, laptops, smart TVs, and streaming devices: These may be supported if they can connect through a wired Ethernet port or compatible Ethernet adapter.

Devices That May Not Be Supported

  • Nintendo Switch Lite: This system does not use the standard Nintendo Switch dock. It may not be supported unless the student can connect it through a compatible wired Ethernet adapter and provide a wired/Ethernet MAC address.
  • Older portable consoles: Devices such as PSP, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 2DS, and Nintendo 3DS are typically wireless-only and cannot use the enhanced gaming service.
  • Phones and tablets: These devices are typically wireless-only but may be compatible with a USB-Ethernet adapter.
  • Devices without Ethernet support: Any device that cannot connect through a wired Ethernet connection cannot use the enhanced gaming service.

Troubleshooting

  • Confirm the device is connected to the wall jack using an Ethernet cable.
  • Confirm the wired/Ethernet MAC address was registered, not the wireless MAC address.
  • Confirm the correct dorm, room number, device type, and wall jack number were included in the request.
  • If the device requires an Ethernet adapter, dock, or hub, confirm the adapter is compatible with the device.
  • If the device is still showing a strict NAT type after the request is completed, submit a follow-up ticket for additional assistance.
