Setup Microsoft Authenticator via a device Passkey

Overview

This guide is for students, faculty, and staff who can log in on their personal mobile devices but are getting "stuck" at a Passkey prompt when trying to sign into a Lab PC, Classroom PC, or Personal Computer.

Why you should use Push Notifications

While a Passkey is a valid method of authentication, it is often tied to the specific hardware of your phone or personal computer. This causes issues when:

  • Logging into Lab/Shared PCs: A desktop computer cannot "see" the Passkey stored on your phone's hardware.

  • New Device Setup: Passkeys don't always sync to new or public hardware.

Push Notifications (App Approval) are the recommended and preferred method at FAU because they send a login request over the cloud to your phone, allowing you to quickly and securely approve your sign-in on any device, anywhere.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.  Open Microsoft Authenticator on the device with the existing Passkey

2.  Click on your FAU e-mail address

3.  Click “Update Security Information”

4.  Your device's web browser will open to a Microsoft login portal.  Please login and approve the passkey prompt.

5.  Once logged in, you'll see the Microsoft Security page.  If you are not on the "Security Info" screen, please click the hamburger stack and select "Security Info".

6.  Once on the Security Info screen, select "add sign-in method", then select Microsoft Authenticator.

7.  Click Next, then select "Pair your account to the app by clicking this link".  Microsoft Authenticator will open and you'll now be able to receive push notifications to login.
