Windows: Keeping your computer up-to-date

FOR OIT MANAGED COMPUTERS:

It is important to note the following when verifying that your computer receives all necessary Windows updates:

  1. Every week, Security and System updates get pushed out to all computers connected to the FAU domain. These updates are scheduled to run every Wednesday night/ early Thursday morning. It is important to leave your computer on during this timeframe. Some computers that are left off will not receive the necessary Windows updates.
  2. Machines encrypted with SecureDoc do not recieve the Windows feature upgrades. If your computer is encrypted with SecureDoc, the OIT Desktop Support team will be reaching out to you to schedule the best time to decrypt your machine and uninstall SecureDoc. OIT is in the process of encrypting all FAU machines with a more compatible encryption software called BitLocker.
  3. If you experience issues with a computer that is not encrypted, it is best to verify that your computer is updated. Windows releases new feature upgrades periodically. Currently, the newest feature upgrade version is Windows 10 1909.

I. VERIFYING WINDOWS VERSION

  • Type WINVER into the search in the bottom left-hand corner of your computer. The following box will pop-up.
  • This example shows that this computer is running on Windows 10 Version 1709. If possible, it would be best to manually run updates so that the computer is upgraded to Windows 10 Version 1909.

II. CHECKING FOR WINDOWS UPDATES

  • The computer can be used while updates are running. Computers will require a restart after updates are ran.
  • Select Start (search) > Settings > Update & Security > Check online for updates from Microsoft Update (note that if you don't see the last option then select Check for updates instead)

  • If updates are available then they will begin downloading and installing automatically
  • If you do not see any updates begin to automatically install, click the option to Check online for updates

  • When the installations are complete, Windows may require the computer to be restarted. Select Restart now

III. OPTIONAL FEATURE UPDATES FOR WINDOWS

  • Feature updates may require a manual download to install them
  • Under Feature update... Select Download and install now

  • You may need to select Check for updates again for the feature update to run if it hasn't already
  • When the installations are complete, Windows will prompt for the computer to be restarted. Select Restart now
