What causes this?

A BitLocker recovery prompt can appear after certain security-related changes, such as BIOS changes, firmware updates, Secure Boot changes, hardware changes, or other system updates.

What information do I need?

  1. Locate the Recovery Key ID shown on the BitLocker screen.
  2. Use another device to retrieve the recovery key using the method below.
  3. Enter the 48-digit recovery key into the BitLocker recovery screen.
  4. Select Continue.
Note: The Recovery Key ID helps identify the correct recovery key. It is not the same as the 48-digit recovery key.

Get Your Own Recovery Key for an Intune-Managed Device

If you are the primary user of an Intune-managed FAU device, you may be able to retrieve your own BitLocker recovery key using Microsoft's recovery key page.

  1. On another device, go to: https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey .
  2. Sign in using your FAU email address.
  3. Select Devices from the left-hand side.
  4. Locate your FAU computer.
  5. Select View BitLocker keys.
  6. Match the displayed Key ID to the Recovery Key ID shown on the locked computer.
  7. Click Show recovery key and then enter the matching 48-digit recovery key into the BitLocker recovery screen on your computer.
