My Computer is Requesting a BitLocker Recovery Key

If your computer displays the following BitLocker screen, you will need to enter your device's BitLocker Recovery Key to access your computer:

What causes this? BIOS changes or updates can prompt the computer for a BitLocker Recovery Key

Our environment is in a transition period of upgrading to a new computer management system. FAU computers are currently managed by two different computer management systems. Some devices are SCCM managed while other devices are updated to the new Intune computer management system. This means that there are two routes you can try to access a BitLocker recovery key for your computer.

How-to access a BitLocker Recovery Key for a SCCM managed device:

  1. On another device, please connect to the FAU Network
  2. Go to the BitLocker Self-Service website. You will receive a connection is not private error. Please select to proceed to the website in the browser that you are using.
  3. Sign-in with your FAUNetID and Password
  4. Check the box and select Continue 
  5. Enter 8 characters of the Bitlocker Key ID and Select a Reason from the drop-down menu. Select the Reason that you believe is most accurate.
    1. If you receive an error that the Recovery key is not found, verify that the information was typed correctly. If it was typed correctly, it is possible that your device is Intune managed and you should proceed to the next set of instructions for how-to access a Recovery Key for Intune managed devices
  6. Enter the 48-digit code into the BitLocker recovery screen on your computer 
  7. You should now have access to your computer

How-to access a BitLocker Recovery Key for an Intune managed device:

  1. If you are the primary user of your device, you should be able to access the recovery key
  2. On another device, sign into aka.ms/aadrecoverykey with your FAU email
  3. Locate your FAU computer under Devices on the left-hand side
    1. Select Get BitLocker keys 
    2. Find the corresponding Key ID, and type the Recovery Key into your computer
