Unable to Remote Desktop- Sleep Mode Settings

If you receive the error message below when attempting to remote into your work computer it could mean a number of things:

  1. The computer is turned off.
  2. Remote Desktop needs to be Enabled on the computer. Instructions available here
  3. The Sleep and Power settings need to be updated on the computer.

The first suggestion is to reboot the computer you are currently using to remote desktop, reconnect to VPN, then try again. (If you were previously connected remotely this resolves the majority of cases) If you continue to receive the error, then proceed with the steps below.

In order to change the sleep settings, you may need to ask someone to visit the computer to "wake" it up or reboot so you can access it remotely. Once you get access or if you are on campus please follow the instructions below:

1) Search Power and Sleep in the Windows Search Bar and select it.

2) Once you open the settings for Power and Sleep you will see the following screen.

3) Click on the drop-down menu under the option "Sleep". Choose "Never".

Note: You may also do this for your "Screen" settings but this does not affect your ability to remote in from home, it will only stop your screen turning off after X mins/hours of activity.

4) Your settings should look like the picture below once the above steps have been followed.

If you are need any assistance with making these changes to your computer please submit a ticket here
