Placing a Mediasite Video into Canvas

Before You Begin

This guide assumes the video you want to share is already in your "My Mediasite" portal. If you need to upload or create a new video first, please see one of our related guides:

There are two options for Canvas: Embedded link or the Mediasite Catalog

1. Using the Embed tool

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In Canvas, navigate to the content area where you want to place the video (e.g., a Page, Announcement, etc.) and click the Edit button to open the Rich Content Editor.

  2. In the toolbar of the Rich Content Editor, click the Apps icon, which looks like an electrical plug. A dropdown menu will appear showing a list of available tools. (As the location of this icon is not always obvious, a screenshot of the Canvas editor toolbar with an arrow pointing to the Apps/Plug icon would be effective here.)

  3. From the list of tools, select Add Mediasite Video.

  4. A pop-up window will appear, displaying the contents of your My Mediasite library. You can scroll through your presentations or use the search bar at the top to find a specific video.

  5. Once you locate the video you wish to add, look to the right of the video's title. You will see several options for how to add it to your page.

Choosing Your Display Option

You have two primary choices for how the video will appear on your Canvas page:

  • Embed Video (Recommended): This option places the full Mediasite video player directly onto the Canvas page. Students can watch the video, see the slides, and use all the playback features without ever leaving Canvas. This provides the best user experience.

  • Link Video: This option places a simple, clickable text hyperlink on the page. When a student clicks the link, they will be taken to a new tab to watch the video on the Mediasite viewing portal.

After you click your preferred option, you will be returned to the Canvas editor. You will see a placeholder image where your video will appear.

Finally, click the Save button on the Canvas page to publish your changes.

2. Using the Mediasite Catalog

Activating the Mediasite Catalog

By default, the link to your course's Mediasite video catalog is hidden. Follow these steps to make it visible to you and your students in the course navigation menu.

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas.

  2. In the course navigation menu on the left, click on Settings.

  3. Click the Navigation tab at the top of the page.

  4. On this page, you will see two lists. The top list shows items currently visible in your course menu. The bottom list shows items that are hidden.

  5. In the bottom list, find Mediasite Catalog.

  6. Click and drag the Mediasite Catalog item from the bottom list up to the desired position in the top list.

  7. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save button. The Mediasite Catalog link will now appear in your course navigation menu.

Linking Presentations to Your Catalog

Once you have activated the Mediasite Catalog, you can add videos. You can access your university Mediasite content portal via the My Mediasite link in your Canvas course navigation or on the course Settings page.

Adding a Presentation to the Catalog

This method will publish your video directly to the Mediasite Catalog page you just enabled.

  1. From your Canvas course, click on My Mediasite in the course navigation menu. This will open your Mediasite portal.

  2. Locate the presentation you wish to add to your course catalog.

  3. Click on the title of the presentation to open its summary page.

  4. On the right-hand side, click the Edit Details button.

  5. Scroll down until you find the Modules section.

  6. Click the Add to Module button. A pop-up window will appear.

  7. In the pop-up window, select the Courses tab.

  8. Find and click on your course's SIS ID. Simply clicking the ID selects the course;

    • The SIS ID is structured by year, term, part of term, and CRN. The term codes are 01 for Spring, 05 for Summer, and 08 for Fall. The format is YYYYTT_P_CRN. For example, a Fall 2025 course with CRN 12345 would have an SIS ID of: 202508_1_12345.

  9. After you click the SIS ID, the pop-up window will close, and the course will be listed under the Modules section.

  10. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save button to finalize the changes. The presentation is now linked and will appear in your Mediasite Catalog.
